Quick Tom-Yam Fix!
Wednesday, June 11, 2014

So, last Saturday... I whipped up a quick Tom-Yam meal for 4!

I didn't make the meal from scratch with normal herbs and all but for busy housewifes and young people like us with zero patience when it comes to whipping up a meal... This is quite a good recipe! (Though I know of youngsters who are real passionate about cooking & I salute you all. My colleague Ann is one of them. She cooks damn well and is real passionate abt it even up to all the nitty and gritty details like the presentation of the food!!)

Anyway, here are ingredients you need:

Tom Yam Fried Rice

Finely chopped garlic- 2 tbsp
Cold overnight cooked rice
Galangal (Blue ginger) -Finely chopped, 2 tbsp
Shrimps (Or whatever ingredients you want with your rice? Try chicken breast if you prefer to have meat)
Few pieces of Kaffir Lime Leaves
Lemongrass (I chopped mine for the taste to blend in with the rice)
Lime juice (3-4 tbsp- freshly squeezed will be good)
Fish Oil - 1 tbsp
Salt
Sugar
Soy Sauce
Sugar
Chilli Padi (I can't find Thai chilli in normal NTUC supermarkets so I used normal ones. You can get Thai chillies at Golden Mile!)
Tom Yam Paste (The life-saver)

Prepare your ingredients, chop them up nicely and this will take around 15 mins.

And this is the Tom Yam paste that I use. I think it costs $2.60 at NTUC.

I basically didn't follow a recipe and followed my heart so here goes...

- Put some oil in the pan and wait for it to heat up.
- Add your garlic, lemongrass, galangal, chilli padi and stir fry it for a half a minute.
- Put the shrimps in and continue stir-frying
- Than add the rice. (This is the difficult part for me because I am quite small sized and I am damn weak so to stir-fry rice for 4 people.. It was super tedious and I had to fry them in 2 portions and I still made a mess out of my kitchen)
- Make a hole in the middle of the rice and add in the tom yam paste. I used 5 spoonful and it was just right.
- Keep stirring and slowly add in your lime juice, soya sauce, sugar, salt and fish oil to taste. It is a frangrant + flavorful combination. I can't tell you how much I used because it was all based on feelings. I kept trying the rice and adding the condiments until the taste was just right.

Cut a piece of lime and put it on the side before you serve.

Now, for the easier one and the one that requires less effort:

Seafood Tom Yam Soup

Oyster Mushrooms- 1 packet
Squid - I used 2 but you can use more if you like seafood. Up to your preference.
8-10 Prawns- Peel off the skin but keep the shrimp heads so as to gain the sweetness for your soup when it boils
Lime Juice - amt depends on how sour you want your soup to be.
Lemongrass- 3 stalks. (Use the inner tender part)
Chilli Padi- Me and my audience are spice lovers so I added this. You can opt out if you don't need the soup to be too spicy.
Fish oil.
Tom Yam Stock Knorr Cubes(Life-saver.. I basically improved the recipe from the back of the box)

Bring 2 litres of water to boil.
Add the lemongrass.
Add the knorr cubes & chilli padi when water is at boiling point. Stir well and for me, I added the Tom Yam paste that I used for the fried rice for a more richer taste.
Lower the heat and simmer while adding in all the ingredients- mushroom, prawns & squid. Let them cook for 4 minutes.
Keep stirring and in fish oil to taste.
You may add in more tom yam paste or more knorr cubes if you have added too much water. Go with your guts and you will get the perfect balance.
Lastly, add in the lime juice and you will taste both the spice and sourness that you will find in a tom yam soup!

I must say it was a total success for me and I was so happy! Acheivement unlocked!

Share with me your recipes as well or if you decided to use my recipe, let me know how it went! You can tweet me, tag me your dish on instagram or PM me on FB. Whatever flows your boat.

Thank you for reading. Xoxo.

Miam Miam Singapore
Thursday, March 20, 2014

I met up with the girls for dinner sometime back and June suggested that we head to Miam Miam, located at Bugis Junction. She's been seeing her friends posting super delightful photos of Miam Miam's desserts and so, we decided to give it a try!

Miam Miam actually means "Yum Yum" in French and this is a Japanese French cafe.

The ambience was good and the furnitures were all really sweet-looking with pastel coloured chairs. However, the cushions could do better because there were stains and crumbs and I am particular about that. I just want to eat in a place that looks.... Clean?

Anyway, the staff were pleasant and service was great.

Hui Qi and I ordered their signature Miam Miam Spaghetti and we had really high expectations of it because it was stated that their signature special sauce was used to cook it!

However...it was hard for me to taste their special sauce because all I tasted was sesame and and it was overall quite salty. I still prefer my usual aglio olio. Hui Qi liked it though.

June ordered Arrabbiata spaghetti and it was quite like bolognaise to me. A tad sweet and.... normal?

Their ice lemon tea came without sugar! The most hilarious thing was that I asked for honey instead of sugar water for the tea and I ended up screwing up my own drink.

Our pastas cost $15.80.

Their desserts were quite a hit with people or they were just Instagram worthy...
Their desserts mostly take 20 to 30 minutes to bake so remember to tell them to make it halfway through your meal! Actually, the staff there are alright and they will ask you beforehand whether you would like them to prepare it first.

We ordered their Valrhona Chocolate Souffle and we were quite disappointed by it because it tasted no where as heavenly as what they have proclaimed. Melted chocolate and normal cakey spongey feel. That's all.

I am not a dessert person so don't judge by my own honest opinion. You can go try it yourself. $13.80 for a souffle is a little expensive no?

After finishing the dessert, we were thirsty because the dessert was sweet and so we wanted some water even though we did order Iced Matcha and Iced Lemon Tea.

But WTF....... We were told that a glass of iced water would costs $0.50!!!!

Freaking 50 cents.

They must be out of their minds! This would be the reason that I will never ever return to Miam Miam ever again. Our meal costs us around $75 and you still expect us to pay $0.50 for a glass of water.

THAT IS ABSOLUTELY CRAZY PLEASE.

Nevertheless, we had a good time because we had each other's company! Watched 300, Rise of an Empire and got our IDs checked. How young we are =D

 Cheers to our friendship!

Thank you for reading! Xoxo!

Apologies but I didn't take photos of the food on that day because everyone was starving thanks to those that were late. So, once everyone had reached, we dug in almost immediately.

We took up the CNY set dinner that costs $168 per table and I must say that the food tasted real good but it's just that some of us couldn't take the spiciness. Not me though, I love chilli to death. Haha.

If you are still thinking of where to eat your CNY reunion dinner, stop thinking and call 64403270 and look for Kenny to make your reservations NOW!

To make it up for the lack of photos, here is cute me with the cute + handsome Thaddeaus.

Tim Ho Wan (Review)
Wednesday, July 31, 2013

Sorry for the small hiatus from this space!! I am busy handling a new business partnership and if you do know of any corporate clients who wants to do a mobile app, please refer them to me and I will definitely pay you referral fees!

Let's get to what I'm supposed to blog about today.

(TIM HO WAN)

Located at :
68 Orchard Road #01-29A
Plaza Singapura
Singapore 238839

Ever since the opening, everyone is hyped up about this cheapest Michelin restaurant opening here on our sunny island, I was too of course but I was always too lazy to queue!!

After returning from Bangkok, I finally decided to head down to try out the delicious dim sum that everyone was raving about.

There were 4 of us and as it was a Friday afternoon, we queued for around an hour which wasn't so bad because I heard of those who queued for 3 hours!

We were to tick our orders before we were seated so as to facilitate smooth and fast delivery of the hot steaming dim-sum!

Post-Bangkok/Buriram withdrawal symptoms shown clearly on our faces and also plus the hunger after one hour of queuing.

But cam-whore is still a must!
Glutinous rice with chicken was one of their specialities but I clearly had forgotten the exact name for this dish!! I give it a 4 over 5 because it wasn't too bland!
Shared a bowl of congee with James and I must say that the congee wasn't in anyway special but still, pleasant to the taste buds!
And. You have to see me sipping it. Haha.

I don't know how to appreciate chicken feet and I have no idea how to eat it plus whether it is nice or not but according to the others who had it, it was a pass!! :)
Softest "Malay Cake/马来糕"that I had ever! It was so tender that you would have thought you was biting into cotton instead of a cake!
I have to totally applaud them for this f-ing amazing chilli. It was so good that I wanted to pack it home. You know how normal chilli sauces for dim-sum are right? More to the sweet kind than the spicy ones. BUT this has the spice that a standard chilli should have!!
Three cheers for the "Chee Cheong Fun"!! I ate the one with prawns while James mum ate the one with pork liver! Both are yummylicious! I don't eat pork liver but it did looked good enough to drool!
Next came the beancurd roll which was a little too oily in my opinion.
My favourite "Har Gow"!!!! So happy that the prawns were so fresh!

The star of the day was definitely this. Their legendary roasted pork buns! Everyone was entitled to only a portion which includes 3 buns. We ate a few and kept the rest for takeaway. They were so precious lor! Truth be told, I am no fan of char siew buns cos I don't like char siew in the first place but this really blew me away!
The carrot cake was so-so to me because of the oil content too. I am not trying to act healthy here hor.
Nothing much about this beancurd roll either.
Siew mai is best when the shrimps are so fresh!!
Osmasthus cake feels, looks and tastes good. It was a cold and delightful dessert!!
Finale:

Had a great time there but I wouldn't visit again until they have more branches because I don't want to queue. Teehee.

[ REVIEW ] TASTE OF THAILAND
Monday, April 29, 2013

TASTE OF THAILAND @  YISHUN.

Here's another food review and as we all LOVE food, I am sure you will love this recommendation.

Firstly, I must declare that I am a HUGE fan of Thai Food! The top 3 authentic Thai Food in my mind now would be (1) Nakhon Kitchen @ Kovan. (2) ...... a Thai food stall at Orchard Towers which I cannot remember the name already but I remember the way there and that is more important!

Please, if you have any great Thai Food places to recommend in Singapore, please leave a comment below or EMAIL me. Share the love!

I know it's funny that I am starting the post with my own self-shots but I kinda miss seeing me on my updates. I have been regularly updating so much of other photos but not my own.. I know you all also miss me a lot right?

I have reviewed before a Thai-Chinese food stall in another post which was called Hui Wei Chinese-Thai Cuisine.

This place I am reviewing is also a similar food stall located at Yishun!
Address here : 1001 Yishun Industrial Park A
#01-1001 Yishun Industrial Food Centre
Tel: 67589121Fax: 67540053

Located in an industrial park, who would have thought the place will be so fully packed? They do not charge GST or service charge, which is definitely a plus point! We reached there around 7pm and the whole, yes, I mean WHOLE coffeeshop was packed, all of which were eating from "Taste Of Thailand"!  Thank God that Shi Hao and family stayed near there and were already queuing beforehand. We were to order our dishes before we were seated.

Look at the crowd!

Here are the dishes that we had that day and as I was really hungry, I missed out a photo of the Tom Yam soup but we can all imagine what the soup looks like right? Hee.

This is their famous fried fish and I must say that it was really a key dish that day. The skin was fried to the ultimate crispiness and it tasted really good when matched with the sauce.

I give it a 4.8/5!

The reason why I took a close-up photo of the Pineapple Fried Rice was because all of us were so eager to dig into it that by the time I wanted to take a photo, there was only a quarter left! We had like 4 big plates of these! How hungry were we, can you imagine! There were 11 of us and as soon as the rice was out, we scooped it empty, almost immediately.

4/5 for this dish!

Hot-Plate Tofu was a dish that I think many would enjoy because the piping-hot sauce had a tangible sour and spicy taste which was just right for a Thai-Chinese cuisine. We really enjoyed this dish and finished it before it even had a chance to turn cold.

4/5 for this!

We actually ordered "Long Bean" vegetable but apparently, the wrong dish was presented. Being hungry ghosts, we didn't bother to ask for an exchange and ate it after all.  This was the  most "meh" dish that day because it tasted beyond average. Not to our liking, I guess?

2/5 for this!

THIS was the star that day and we had ordered 2 of it! I just don't know of anyone who doesn't like fried squid or also known as "calamari" because it is just so nice! (Unless if you are allergic to seafood of couse!) As long as this dish was served piping hot, I am sure everyone will love it as much as we did.

4.5/5!

The "Lemon Chicken" was a tad too sour for me in my opinion but as I don't really like sour stuffs, it could be tasty for you if you are a person who loves sour food! The chicken was fried to a neat perfection so no complains about that.

3/5!

The "Tom Yam Soup" we had was a 4.9/5 for me as I am not only a sucker for soup, I especially love Tom Yam Soup! The one served here was really nice and really Thai! I dislike those Tom Yam Soup whereby all they do is add some tomato and some spices to conjure the Thai flavor into it, which normally fails and is always too blend. I don't think a portion of the soup was enough for the 11 of us though as we all seemed to enjoy the soup very much!

I love gatherings like this whereby we catch-up and bond over good food but I hate to be the planner because usually, nobody cares about replying me and they usually take advantage of the planner so one of my resolution this year was to not bother so much! As compared to Hui Wei Chinese-Thai cuisine, both was affordable as we spent only about $11 per pax. So overall, it depends on where you stay and where you prefer to go for your meals! Both are highly recommended by food guru, Snow =D

Ending this post with a really nice photo of James and Thaddeaus!

I can only imagine how he will look as a father, real loving! :)

Xoxo, till the next time!
