MUAY THAI- THE SCIENCE OF EIGHT LIMBS
Many of you may not know but I had taken up Muay Thai some time ago due to the influence of James. James started Muay Thai 5 years ago...he fell in love, got married to Muay Thai and... the rest is HISTORY.
Due to time constraints plus work & school commitments... I had stopped Muay Thai all together for some time but I know I will return to it some day.
Here, I want to tell you 5 facts about Muay Thai at ASFITNESS at Tanglin CC.
(1) Muay Thai is NOT all about violence. Many people have the misconception that Muay Thai is all bloody and violent and just a very ferocious sports. Well, you all are wrong. Muay Thai is a combat sport from Thailand. It is called the art/science of eight limbs because it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees, shins and feet. It is not about how you cause harm to your opponent, it is about how you defend yourself against an opponent using your shoulders, arms and legs.
As per the below photo, you can see that I am trying to block my opponent while striking a kick towards her. Muay Thai is part of learning how to defend.
(2) Muay Thai is about discipline.
James did not gain those packs overnight. Every match that he took part in, he had to go through a lot from losing weight to training hard and eating well. If he took part in the lightweight category of 63kg, he had to lose all the excess weight the day before his weigh-in. Any lighter or heavier, he may not be able to take part in that match anymore. It is all about responsibility and the discipline to be at his best. James also quit smoking because of this sport. He also took to eating healthy regularly.
(3) Muay Thai is about strength and conditioning.
Muay Thai is specifically designed to promote the level of fitness and toughness required for a match. Running, shadowboxing, rope jumping, body weight resistance exercises, medicine ball exercises, abdominal exercises is part of the regimen. They need to repeatedly condition their shins, hardening the bone through a process called cortical remodeling. (Please google if you want to know more or join us at Tanglin CC =D)
(4) Muay Thai may help you to find a meaning in life.
Because of my past, I know of a lot of wayward teens like me who resorts to substance abuse, street fight and other rebellious acts to find a direction in life. What if, Muay Thai could lead you to where you want to be? What it, Muay Thai can change you into someone whom you have never thought you would be? I know how it feels to feel all alone and not knowing which road in life to take but you may not be a champion anywhere else, you could be a champion in Muay Thai. Who knows? What is there to lose except some sweat?
(5) Muay Thai can help you to meet more people from all walks of life.
This is something that has brought me very far after knowing all the people that Muay Thai has brought me to. Like every other sport/activity that you take part in, you will know more people and make more friends. Getting to know others who share the same interest in the same sports as you and then getting to network with them and develop bonds with them, it is not easy but at Tanglin CC, we are a really fun bunch!
I think these photos will show you how fun we can be when we are not in the ring and also how serious we can get when we are in the ring.
Our coach looks young but he has a lifetime of experiences. Guess which one is our coach?
No matter a defeat or a victory, we share the same smile, the same pride, the same tears and the same frustrations.
